“Reaching For The Sun” – a new painting of Canada’s west coast – plus a quick update

It seems like it has been ages since I have put up a blog post on this site. 2016 to this point has been busy and productive. Multiple paintings have already been completed this year, for some reason it has been just a very good year to this point for creating work. In addition to the painting, I have been prototyping new naturally dyed hand knits (for http://www.handmade-canada.com ), had some lovely portrait shoots, and spent quite a lot of time working with wood and carving. It seems I am spending more time working with my hands than on the computer, which explains the very sparse blog posts.

This year I have been painting on panel, canvas and paper. The work above was finished late last night and is acrylic on paper. I am still working with the Roe Islet subject matter, it seems the more I paint the more I find to paint and explore. This is turning into a beautiful project with so many possibilities.

Hopefully the blog posts will become more frequent in the coming weeks. It’s funny that when you are really busy and have lots to share that it is also when you have the least amount of time to blog. Hopefully I’ll be back with another blog post soon, however if you follow Instagram, I often put “in progress” images up under @debramhunter if you want to take a look.

Canadian Inspired Knitting

o canada collection 4x6_0974

As some of you may know, I have a new site up called Handmade in Canada. It is a site of handmade and art pieces, influenced and inspired by Canada, and often made with natural, eco-friendly and Canadian sourced materials.

Over the next few weeks we will be adding shops and galleries to our various collections on Handmade in Canada. Today we launched the O’ Canada Collection.

Our O’Canada Collection celebrates the colors of our flag. The iconic red and white, are accompanied by grays, dark browns and blacks. This is classic Canadian. Our collection will remind you of ….well……everything Canadian (and maybe old school work socks too!).

The O’ Canada Collection is made of natural sheep wool, produced here in Canada and milled in a heritage mill. We believe in using natural products and using Canadian produced raw materials when possible. The yarn for this collection is hand dyed in natural dyes in micro batches with the red color being obtained through dyeing with lac. All items are hand knit and are one of a kind. Each item posted is available for purchase and ready to be shipped. Items can be viewed by clicking HERE.

Items start at $15.00 including tax and shipping within Canada. The pieces make great gifts for friends and family  as they are Canadian made, unbreakable, and ship well.

I hope you will pop over to the new site and check it out. More collections are to come. Also if you have any special requests send us an email, we are always up for creating something new.

Evening View to Clam Bay Farm – New Canadian Painting

"Evening View to Clam Bay Farm" 2015 12"x12" acrylic on panel

“Evening View to Clam Bay Farm”
2015
12″x12″
acrylic on panel

This painting was inspired by an evening view of historic Clam Bay Farm on Pender Island (British Columbia, Canada). Through the smoky haze of distant forest fires soft colors play in the distance.

A smaller sized panel, pastel colors and new subject matter  created new territory for painting. This is the second painting in the last couple of weeks with an agricultural theme. This is perhaps not what first comes to mind when you think of the Gulf Islands, but farming is definitely part of the island’s past, present and culture.

A New Painting – Sea Star Vineyards (Pender Island)

“Sea Star Vineyards” 2015 11×14 acrylic on panel

Sometimes a peak through the slats in a gate leads to inspiration. That is the story of this painting. A quick look and a shot on the iPhone and the idea to paint this piece was planted. It was fun to paint this image, brighter colors than usual, smaller in size, and painted in the course of an evening (and into the night if I am to be truthful!). The painting speaks of a carefree summer day on Pender Island (British Columbia, Canada)

Knitting in Progress

coffee press sweaters may 2015

Another Coffee Press Sweater order is currently being worked on for Woods on Pender. I am currently at the half way mark. This grouping features indigo, madder, chamomile, pomegranate and turmeric as the natural dyes used for dyeing the wool. Each item features the Woods on Pender logo.

I have many hours of knitting ahead of me this week completing this order. If the weather holds I will also be getting the indigo vat going so that I can start dyeing another stock of indigo dyed wool. The blue color is becoming a favorite in a lot of my pieces.

“Standing Tall” – Canadian Landscape Painting

"Standing Tall" Roe Islet series (2015) 24"x24" acrylic on panel

“Standing Tall”

Roe Islet (Pender Island, BC, Canada) continues to be a source of inspiration for my paintings, and I am sure by the time I have exhausted all the painting possibilities I will know every rock and tree on the islet. The arbutus amaze me in the way they twist and turn, and the red of the trunks is hypnotizing.

This painting features a view up a small hill looking towards Currents and Otter Bay. If you were to walk the path you would recognize the twisted  tree in the center of the painting. Roe Islet, for its intimate size, is a most beautiful natural spot and well worth a visit.
