The Freedom Series – painting

Freedom 1- 8″x10″, ink on paper, 2018

The Freedom Series is an ongoing group of pieces started in 2018. I had wanted to work on an ongoing project that had few limitations in an effort to avoid “painters block”. By choosing the word “freedom”, it allowed me to approach the paintings with just that, freedom. It could be abstract, landscape, or based on any other inspiration. The only real limitation is that I have chosen to work on paper. This decision was made as I feel you are more likely to produce more work, and take more risks, and experiment more when working on paper instead of canvas or board.

Freedom 2 – 8″x10″, ink on paper, 2018

The pieces, to this point, are an extension of the paintings I am currently doing on canvas. soft and hard lines, fields of color, lots of meshing color, and a nod to landscape.

Freedom 3: Sea – 5″x7″, ink on paper, 2018

Some are also proving to be studies for larger pieces.

Freedom 4: Trainspotting – 5″x7″, ink on paper, 2018

Several weeks in to this project, it is proving to be quite interesting, and quite beneficial, as it is very conducive to promoting a daily practice.

Opus Daily Practice 2017 – Day 4

#opusdailypractice -day-4

Opus Daily Practice day 4. The prompt today was “melting”, which made me think of how the colors of a sunset melt together. The above drawing is still in progress, but it is a start. Speaking of “in progress”, The mini bag is progressing with a strap and toggles being the last two steps before it is finished.

Opus Daily Practice 2017 – Day 1

Opus Daily Practice 2017 - day 1

Opus Art Supplies do a really cool thing for the month of February, they run a feature called Opus Daily Practice in which they encourage people to engage daily in a creative pursuit. 28 days of working on your daily practice to refine and engage consistently with your art.

Last year I found out about  Opus Daily Practice ( #opusdailypractice ) too late to take part, but this year I have decided to give it a try. The year before last I set out a drawing project for myself, which was a still life drawing a day , each day, for 6 months, so I should be able to do 28 consecutive days as long as life goes to plan.

I am going to extend my goal to all my pursuits, painting, drawing, photography and fibre art (including knitting) as I feel “craft” is as creative as “art”.

Today’s daily practice includes a drawing in progress and some maple leaf socks. The drawing is 5″x7″, pen and ink. It will take several days to finish so it will likely be a reoccurring feature over the next 28 days. The socks are near completion, maybe one day left; I’ll share them once they are finished as they are quite an original pair.

If you are interested in Opus Daily Practice you can check out the Opus Art Supplies website and also follow people participating in the concept on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook by searching the hashtag #opusdailypractice .
